Recall: 2009-2010 Ford F-150 – Door Handle Failures

Ford is recalling 280,000 of its popular F-150 pickups because a failure in the door handle could allow the doors to open in a crash.

The recall affects 2009 and 2010 models built between Jan. 18, 2008 and Nov. 30, 2009.

According to the recall notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a plastic piece of the interior door handle mechanism can become fatigued over time and reduce tension on the door handle spring. If this happens, the door could fail to latch properly. Ford is not aware of any accidents related to this potential problem.

Owners will receive a letter asking them to bring their trucks into a local Ford dealer for inspection once replacement parts become available, starting about Feb. 14. The door handle will either be reinforced or replaced, depending on its condition in the inspection.

The recall number from Ford is 11S15. For more information, F-150 owners can contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332.

*****It must be noted that this door latch may also fail in the event of a rollover accident involving Ford F-150 trucks, since the same or even great forces are in play in the case of a rollover accident in a truck or SUV. *****
