Rural Teens Seriously Injured in Ford F150 Rollover Accident
COLUMBUS — Two rural Columbus boys were seriously injured Wednesday morning in a one-vehicle rollover accident in icy conditions and subzero temperatures on Mason Road about seven miles north of Columbus.
The two boys, both aged 18, were transported to Columbus Community Hospital suffering from serious but not life-threatening injuries in the 7:44 a.m. crash on Mason Road just south of 355th Street.
The teens, driver Jacob Mohr and passenger Thaddeus Howe, were southbound on Mason Road when the 2003 Ford F-150 pickup they were in hit a patch of snow that had drifted across the gravel road, said Platte County Sheriff’s Deputy Douglas Alexander.
Their condition was upgraded to stable this morning.
The driver over-corrected after hitting the snow drift, went into the east ditch, rolled over once and came to rest about 50 feet off the roadway, Alexander said. The crash was reported within a couple of minutes by a passerby, he said.
Alexander said both boys were ejected from the vehicle before it came to rest, and neither was wearing a seat belt.
Alexander said he spoke to the driver of the pickup, who was on his way to Columbus High School, at the hospital following the accident. The deputy said the boy was alert and talking coherently. Alexander said he was unable to speak with the second teen.
Both boys’ family members were notified of the accident and were at the hospital, Alexander said.
Creston and Humphrey rescue units responded to the accident scene.
