The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating allegations that front air bag sensors on 2006 Dodge Caravans may fail because of corrosion, causing the airbags in the Dodge Caravans to improperly inflate during a crash or completely fail to deploy.

This airbag defect investigation involves about 805,000 Dodge and Chrysler vans including the:

• 2005 Dodge Caravan
• 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan
• 2005 Chrysler Town & Country minivan
• 2006 Dodge Caravan
• 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan
• 2006 Chrysler Town & Country minivan

NHTSA's preliminary evaluation determined that the front airbag sensors may corrode as a result of moisture seeping into the airbag sensor assembly. The NHTSA said it had received complaints about the failure of front airbag crash sensors in the minivans, possibly because of corrosion. "A corroded airbag sensor can set a fault code, illuminate the air bag warning lamp, and become disabled," NHTSA said "The failure of one or both front crash sensors can potentially result in no deployment or late deployment of the front air bags. The failure can cause the non-deployment of the driver's side air bag which produces higher inflation levels," according to the NHTSA website.

The NHTSA airbag failure report states that "it should be noted that occupants of vehicles involved in a crash may not be aware of late or improperly reduced level of air bag inflation" because of the nature of the system in the vehicles. There has been no NHTSA airbag recall due to the Dodge Caravan airbag problems and failures at the time of the writing of this article.
